About Worcester, Worcestershire and the Severn

Get to know the cathedral city, its riverside neighbourhoods, historic streets and the communities around it.

A city beside the Severn

Worcester brings a cathedral, independent shopping streets and working neighbourhoods together beside the River Severn. The city centre is compact enough to explore on foot, but the directory also looks beyond the High Street to St Johns, Warndon, Barbourne, Claines and the villages around the city.

St Johns lies west of the river, while Diglis connects the southern end of the centre with the waterside. A business serving Worcester may be based in one of these neighbourhoods rather than in the main shopping streets. Check the address and service area before setting off.

Cathedral and civic landmarks

Worcester Cathedral stands above the river at the southern end of the centre. Its visitor entrance is through the North Porch from College Yard, opposite the High Street. Services and events can affect which spaces are open, so use the cathedral's own visitor information when planning a visit.

Further along the High Street, the red-brick Guildhall provides a distinctive civic landmark. Turn into Friar Street and New Street for a different view of Worcester, with historic buildings alongside places to eat, shop and meet.

Markets and everyday shopping

Worcester's weekly outdoor market moved to the Corn Market in September 2026. It is separate from the craft markets on the High Street. Older visitor pages still mention Angel Place, so check the organiser's current details before travelling for a particular stall.

The Shambles, Broad Street, Reindeer Court and the surrounding lanes add smaller shops to the main retail routes. A visit can combine practical errands with a cafe stop, without needing to treat the centre as a sightseeing circuit.

Finding services across the city

Use the directory to compare businesses by what they do and where they work. For trades and appointment-based services, a Worcester service area does not always mean a city-centre premises. Ask about travel, availability and the work you need when making an enquiry.
