Things to do in Worcester, from the riverside to Friar Street

Build a day around cathedral heritage, smaller museums, independent stops and activities across the city.

Start with the cathedral quarter

College Yard makes a useful starting point for Worcester Cathedral and the southern end of the High Street. Inside, allow time to look rather than treating the cathedral as a quick photo stop. Worship continues here, and access can change around services and events.

The cathedral tower is currently closed until Easter 2027 according to its dedicated visitor page. A visit to the cathedral should not depend on being able to climb it. Check that page for any later reopening announcement.

Make time for a smaller heritage venue

The Commandery on Sidbury explores Worcester's history, including its Civil War connections. Its visitor programme is seasonal, and it closes during January; check the museum's own page before planning a trip around it.

Greyfriars House and Garden on Friar Street offers another way into the city's past. House visits are usually by guided tour, with limited places. The garden, cafe and house have different access arrangements, and the historic house has steps and narrow spaces. Use the National Trust's access information if that affects your plans.

Add a riverside pause

The Severn gives Worcester a quieter counterpoint to the shopping streets. Choose a section of the riverside that suits your group, then leave time for a drink or lunch back in the centre. River levels and weather can affect paths; follow local signs rather than assuming every waterside route is available.

Diglis and the streets around the cathedral can provide different starting points. Check the route, surface and return journey before committing to a longer walk.

Choose an activity close to home

A regular class, club or evening performance can be more useful than another one-off attraction. Look for music, dance, games and community activities in the area you can reach comfortably, then ask the organiser about current sessions and booking.
